Leadership Challenge Ideas.....

During the second session of 'Closing the Gap' the aims were to understand the significance of this and how to target this. From this I was able to begin considering viable options for my leadership challenge-

These ideas weren't just plucked out of no where though.  There was some discussion based on the Sutton Trust results focused on improving teaching and learning and the impact specific strategies would have. Due to teaching a practical subject the idea of focusing on 'oral language interventions' is something that has my initial interest. Literacy and 'word poverty' is an area I am keen to develop and focus on to improve learner's attainment as well as developing more cross-curricular skills in Art.

As always during the session there was time for self reflection on my strengths and weaknesses to enable me to develop into an effective leader.  Key qualities as outlined by the National College for Teaching and Leadership and exactly why these matter-

Sessions 1 & 2

So since the first session of Developing Leaders I have had a lot to think about including my leadership challenge and my own learning style.  Ideas have been discussed and something that I found interesting was the Kolb Learning Style Inventory. We all completed this during the first session to discover our learning styles out of the 4 and how we could develop that:
  • Diverging
  • Assimilating
  • Converging
  • Accommodating
Here are some of my results from the workbook:

It came as no surprise that the learning style preferred by me included learning through 'hands on' experience and being practical! The tips for me to strengthen the 'Accommodating' style were the following-
  • Commit yourself to objectives
  • Seek new opportunities
  • Influence and lead others
  • Become personally involved
  • Deal with people
These are definitely something for me to consider over the course and my leadership challenge!
The second session during November focused on 'Closing the Gap' and the importance of this and how it can be done.....post to follow.
